When it came to West German ceramics, Scheurich meant success. Though founded as a family company as early as 1928, Scheurich boomed with the Boom of the postwar years. Their vases and planters were staples of households on the consumer-capitalist side of the Wall. Bold designs like this one in encrusted glazes called “fat lava” were especially popular in the 70s. True Scheurich vessels feature glazed bottoms inscribed with 'W. Germany' and a two number code: in this case 284 for the style designation and 53 for height in centimeters (sizeable at slightly over 21 inches).
