A wonderful & eerie sound is created when Asian Bronze Rain Drums like this one are struck by the heavy monsoon rains of Southeast Asia. Asian bronze rain drums are believed to contain an array of Lucky Spirits, ranging from fertility and wealth through to death (they were often placed in the burial mounds along with the corpse). They were believed to ensure that a good harvest would prevail each year. As here, frogs are depicted because the Thunder God is afraid of frogs. Others believe that the frogs also represent rain; during April the frogs croak loudly, and people feel happy.
